After straggling for days, I finally manage to setup the Mail Portlet in Liferay. At first, I wanted to setup Liferay to work with Postfix and Dovecot, the two officially supported MTA and IMAP server in Ubuntu. Unfortunately, Liferay 4.2.1 support for Dovecot is hectic. I couldn’t get it working. Thanks to the VMWARE image which Brian (the guy who made Liferay possible) made, it is finally up. If only Brian made a tutorial on how he made the setup in his image. :/

I would probably write one, but I have no time at the moment. But drop me a mail if any of you need help making it work.

I just installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS into my Dell 700m laptop and I am blogging with it now =). So did it went smooth? Well, it was way better than RedHat… in terms of usability.

But I did meet up with some problems. One of the main problem is WIFI using WPA. Somehow, the NetworkManager did not have support for anything else but WEP. I am using WPA Personal at home since WEP encrpytion has already been broken. So how to enable WPA support? You will have to go through some time consuming patches… and the steps looks harder than it is. Just follow the step-by-step guide at: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=125150, and you will get your WIFI running with full WPA support! Depending on your Internet connections, it might take you a full day.


I also have to sacrifice using the super USEFUL RoboForm, a Windows only password manager. This is really sad. Because there is no way I will remember password like this: !@FTgbWr1. If Google for “Roboform Linux”, you might get some alternative solution…. but still nothing beats RoboForm as password manager.


The 3rd thing is my built-in SD-Card reader is not working. Ubuntu DOES support SD-Card reader like this, but somehow it is not working for Dell. There are people who are using Compaq laptops and successfully utilize SD-Card right after installing Ubuntu… no patch required. My digicam uses SD card, so I always transfer photos by using my laptop SD Card reader. Now, I have to live with a external card reader instead.

So, that sums up my problems with Ubuntu *Dapper* on my Dell 700m. Just 3. 1 solvable…. another have to find alternative solution, and the final problem…. that we have to wait for some hacker out there to fix it. So far… I like it. Both Eclipse and Intellij IDEA works without problems on Ubuntu. I just need to retrieve my work from Subversion (running on my desktop) and voila! I can start development immediately.

Now I can safely use my laptop… even without a Virus/Spyware Scanner. =)

I got my ubuntu CD which I requested previously. But I got a problem now, I do not have a computer available to test it out. There’s alot of reviews giving the thumbs up for this Debian-like OS - linux for human beings. My snap a picture of the package I got below using my mobile phone…. it’s only 0.3 megapixels… thus the quality of the picture. I have “invested” my digital camera at my friend’s 2 months work at Ohio, US. He will be dropping by Japan… hopefully I will get a good R.O.I (nice pictures. :D).

Previously in this post, I mention about using Eclipse with PHPEclipise plug-in. Well, good news to those who are interested but find it too difficult to install the plugin. EasyEclipse is a Eclipse distribution with tested plugins and packages ready for you! There are a number of distribution available, for example… Mobile Java, Desktop Java, LAMP environment, PHP and so on. Go check it out! They even have the Subversion plugin installed!

The PHP distribution have very similar plugins as what I am using now on my desktop… the difference is I took hours to set it up.

Finally manage to make it run! Phew! There seems to be a bug in subversion which makes it impossible to load subversion modules even after you copied them to the Apache2’s module folder. I was following the instruction from this page: . It is a little dated but it has simple step-by-step instruction. Just follow the instruction given by that link with the below amendments.

*you have to explictly stat the location of this two modules rather than copying them to Apache2 module folder*

I am a big fan of Google, I use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Earth, Google Search, Google AdSense, Google Analytics, Google Talk, Google Desktop, Google Toolbar… and all those Google stuff. Somehow… I am addicted to Google’s tools. This is my “end-user” point of view.

As a web developer, I would prefer a company which provide free and open APIs… preferable allow commercial application as well. At the moment, I would think Yahoo! is on higher ground. I absolutely love Yahoo! Design Pattern Libary! If only Google have a similar resource. I guess I will look into other Yahoo! services more from now on.

After 1 1/2 months of dry session with projects stuck at pending phase, Patch IT have secured a Personal Information Management(PIM) synchronization project. This project will involve creating a VCalendar/VCard standard generator for a Java Enterprise suite, and new sync modules using Funambol (previously Sync4j) DS Server. I have previously did a project which involve synchronization with Nokia communicator.

This new module will synchronize between the enterprise suite and Microsoft Outlook. PIM data like contacts, appointments and task will be synchronized. Technically, it would take little effort to add support for new devices like smartphones, Blackberry and other SyncML compatible devices after this module is completed. The complicated conflict resolution for this project will be the biggest headache….

While doing some research on TinyMCE, I came across Flock, looks like another browser but with extra stuff like Blogging tool, tagging, newsfeed, various tools for managing photos and etc. While reading about Flock, Ubuntu was mention. Curious to see what’s it about, I checked it out.

*WoW, an Linux OS for … human beings.*

For many of us, even developers… it’s hard for us to let go Windows OS. Why? Because it’s still the easiest to use, install, software are easy to find and most important of all… Games. If every game out there has a Linux version I will definitely move to Linux! (or FreeBSD). So, what’s the different with *uix like RedHat, Debian… just to name a few and Ubuntu Linux?

So this is not just another variant of Linux; as more people know about Ubuntu and the meaning of the word… maybe it will remind all of us that no matter how different we all look, we are all humans.
