Streamyx still unstable…

Oct 12, 2006 in Mumblings

I havent been posting lately… it’s mostly because of my unreliable Streamyx connection. I have reactivated my Jaring dail-up, got myself a TM.NET dail-up starter pack and also registered for a time.net dail-up account. @_@ So just I am moving backwards. After some ping testing, I found out that Jaring still have the most reliable infrastructure. I still get lost packets using tmnet dail up… and their DNS server does not respond sometimes.

I have also bought an Aztech 600E ADSL2/2+ modem (technically it should be call a modem/router), and surprisingly, it does increase my bandwidth to what I am suppose to get… (75% of my allocated bandwidth). So guys, it might be time to upgrade your modem. I got mine from Computer War, SS 2 @ RM99.00. It has a built-in router, firewall and stuff… so it is super value for money for those who does not yet have a router. I personally am using a Linksys Wireless-G router, it seems to be compatible after setting the modem to Bridge mode. But unfortunately, I cant seems to access the admin page of my modem if it is connected to my Linksys router. I probably need a firmware update…

Now, all I can do is to wait for the technicians to change my port. :/

TMNET: A step backwards

Oct 02, 2006 in Mumblings

We were asked to change our lifestyle when the fuel price shot up, and now I suppose I have to change my lifestyle and use back dail-up instead of ADSL. TMNET support staff are polite but unhelpful. This afternoon I received a call regarding my SECOND report for the past 7 days. The woman on the phone say the technician have reseted the port.

I quickly said that this is the 2nd time! Reseting the port will NOT solve the problem it will only ease the pain…for 30 minutes MAX! She also mention about me being able to connect for 8 hours straight on my 1st report. Well, what’s the point if I am connected for 8 hours but having a 20% loss packet??! After some discussion she said the technician will look into the problem. @_@ No timeframe on when it will be resolved.

Guess what? I was right after all. After I hang up, I reset my router and do a ping test to tm.net.my. Woohoo! Even ping to google.com comes back to less than 100ms latency. That is really really good. No lost packet as well.

30 minutes later…

Hey… what’s happening? Why is my gmail stuck? Why I cant access yahoo? Why there is a 100% loss packet? At the very moment of writing, I am actually using TIME.NET free dailer to access Internet. Yes, I am “changing” my lifestyle…. Last night I did try to play Dota with TM.NET dail-up, and yes it was much more RELIABLE and no loss packet. I manage to finish the game without any latency (on the other hand, TIME.NET dail-up lags). So in this example, Dail-up owned Streamyx ADSL. I emailed Jaring to request for my lost dail-up password and am also planning to buy a prepaid TMNET dail-up card. I have no choice. I depend alot on my Internet connection at home… for work and for leisure. So it is CRUCIAL that I am connected!

I will wait till tomorrow morning before I make my THIRD report on Streamyx. Why can’t they do it right on the 1st time huh? Wasting resources and my precious time.

TMNET support improved but Streamyx quality still sucks

I called Telekom Malaysia (TM) to fix my line a couple of days ago, and it was done in 24 hours. Even my call to number 100 was answered within a minute. I was pretty impressed.

I also called TMNET regarding my frequent disconnection problem. Again, my call was answered within 2 minutes, which is a big improvement. I remember those days where I have to wait for more than half an hour or suddenly I get hang-up…and have to queue again!

Lately I am having disconnection problem, where my ADSL led will start blinking after maybe.. 10 minutes or so. That issue was fix this morning, but now I am having lost packets problem! I have called and made another report today. Basically, the ADSL led will not blink anymore, but by consistently ping-ing a website (I tried to ping www.tm.net.my) I got 15%-20% of my data packets… lost. Even 1% is very bad!! Because of this, I no longer can play Dota. :(

Well, the support staff of TMNET has improved, but sadly the Quality-of-Service of TMNET broadband infrastructure is still ‘light years’ behind. I really hope they will invest more on providing better quality connections rather than focusing on increasing subscribers. TMNET have virtually monopolized the ADSL industry, they have the RESPONSIBILITY to increase quality. I remember I used to be able to play BNET(connecting to US West server) via Jaring Dail-up service with a lactency of below 300ms. Now, that number is almost impossible to get with Streamyx.
